Great New Book by Alex Sanchez

The God Box is Alex Sanchez (author of the Rainbow Boys trilogy) newest book. I read it in 2 days, just couldn't put it down. As usual Alex has written a very realistic portrayal of the problems and triumphs of gay teens. This time he tackles a very difficult issue, how to reconcile being gay with being Christian, and does a very good job of it. This book touches on various interpretations of the Bible verses commonly used to condemn homosexuality. Also talks about the "ex-gay" movement, gay teen suicide, violence against gays and much more. Let me know what you think if you have read it.

Battles Rage Over Children's Books With Gay Themes | AfterElton.com

Battles Rage Over Children's Books With Gay Themes AfterElton.com This is a very informative article about the impacts of challenges to children's picture books with gay/lesbian themes. It is well written and makes a number of good points. As a lesbian parent, I can relate to the fact that when my boys were younger it was very important to me to find books that showed other families like ours. This was not easy and issues like this won't make it any easier. Get involved in fighting book banning, some day these might be your children that you are looking for good books for!

Killing Miss Kitty and Other Sins

I just finished Killing Miss Kitty and Other Sins by Marion Dane Bauer. It is a biographical fiction, if such a genre exists! The stories are fiction but they are all based on the author's life. This great book is a quick read and hits on a variety of subjects, among them racism, Christianity, and homosexuality. Great coming of age story taking place in the 50's when these issues were all looked on very differently than they are now.

ALA Civil Liberties

This pamphlet by the American Library Association is very good. It contains explanations about civil liberties for teens and also recommended reading.

Totally Joe by James Howe
Really funny. My 12 year old son even loved it and he's straight! As a school assignment, Joe writes his alphabiography- the story of his life from A to Z. Realistic look at a gay teen in middle school. James Howe(who by the way is gay himself) is a very prolific writer. This book is a sequel to The Misfits which tells the story of 4 unlikely friends, one of which is Joe. The Misfits inspired National No Name Calling Week which can be sponsored at any school.

Well this is my first ever attempt at blogging. I work at a bookstore and love to discuss books. Young adult books are one of my favorite genres, and because I am a lesbian I have noticed the recent increase in GLBT titles in this section. When I was growing up(many moons ago) there was not much available for teens who were discovering that their sexuality was different from the majority! Therefore, I decided that I would love to become a resource for teens, parents, and others concerned with helping GLBT young people to find good role models and feel good about themselves.
I imagine this site as doing any number of things:
Reviewing titles with GLBT themes that are suitable for teens and young adults.
Providing a forum for discussion and feedback on these titles and reviews.
Linking to other sites with like interests.
Linking to other sites that may provide help for these young people.
Collecting a master list of book titles recommended for GLBT teens and their friends,
families, etc.
Please provide me with any feedback you may have on this idea. Also send titles and reviews of those titles for me to use here.
Thanks, Clover
